In a significant step toward improving workers' welfare, the Katsina State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hussaini Hamisu 'Yanduna, has praised the government’s dedication to implementing a ₦70,000 minimum wage for workers. He made these remarks during the first meeting of the Minimum Wage Committee, held at the Office of the Head of Civil Service.

The meeting aimed to establish a clear plan for enforcing the new minimum wage, with Hamisu commending Katsina’s long-standing record as a proactive state in labor matters. "Katsina has consistently led the way in implementing important policies, and we have no doubt about the government’s commitment to this initiative," he said.

Hamisu highlighted the economic challenges facing workers, pointing out that the current wages do not adequately cover essential needs such as food, transportation, and healthcare. He expressed optimism that the new minimum wage would greatly enhance the standard of living for workers across the state.

The chairman also stressed the importance of collaboration between labor and government representatives, calling for the inclusion of all key stakeholders in the negotiations. He emphasized the need to address unique salary structures in sectors like health and education to ensure comprehensive and meaningful discussions.

Concluding his remarks, Hamisu expressed confidence that the committee would deliver a competitive wage structure, making Katsina’s salaries a benchmark for other states. He reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to working closely with the government to achieve positive outcomes that prioritize the welfare of both workers and the state.

This inaugural meeting marks a hopeful step toward establishing a fair and balanced wage structure for civil servants in Katsina State.
